We applaud the Red Cross volunteers
Volunteers and staff of the National Red Cross Societies of Romania and Bulgaria celebrate May 8th, World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day. From 1863 till this day, the Red Cross and Crescent Movement is the world's leading means of humanitarian intervention.
In the recent years, Red Cross and Crescent volunteers and employees have supported more than 160 million people in emergencies, from natural disasters to civil wars. Organized as a global network, the results of the actions have an impact at all levels: global, regional, local, always being close to those in need. Therefore, the decisions regarding the organization as a whole and the establishment of the international humanitarian agenda start from those who best understand the problems and solutions: volunteers, people and communities affected by hardships.
In its 158 years of existence, the Red Cross and Red Crescent have always adapted to the challenges it has faced. During this period, since the beginning of the pandemic, volunteers and employees have been constantly in action, taking the risk of illness, to provide humanitarian assistance and socio-medical services to those in need. At the same time, to help communities prepare, they disseminated information essential to prevent and limit the spread of the coronavirus. In unfavourable conditions, the volunteers overcame barriers and with responsibility and dedication, they carried out the mission of the organization.
On this anniversary, we pay tribute to the 14 million volunteers and staff employed by the 192 National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies involved in supporting communities affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
